CAMPS AT ART CENTER WEST
YOUTH WHEEL AND CLAY SCULPTURE CAMP
Designed for the aspiring young artist to learn the basics of making wheel-thrown pottery. Your child will learn a new design vocabulary while gaining hands-on knowledge of the potters’ wheel and glazing techniques. Participants will spend a few days creating ceramic sculpture by hand and exploring clay’s potential as a sculptural medium.

CLAY AND CLIMB
This one-week camp is designed for active young artists to learn the basics of making wheel-thrown pottery as well as to be introduced to the up and coming sport of Recreational Tree Climbing. For the first three days, your child will learn to form lumps of clay into both sculptural and functional objects using the potter’s wheel. While pottery is in the kiln, participants will be introduced to recreational tree climbing by professionally trained instructors. Tree for All will offer adventure campers won’t soon forget (professional climbing equipment provided.) The final day of camp will inside to finish fired works emerging from the kiln. (Climbs scheduled on 6/21 and 7/26)

CLAY PARTY / POTTERY WORKSHOP

This program is great for birthday parties, scout troops, girls’ night out, or any group that is interested in experiencing the ceramic medium firsthand. Participants will complete hand building or wheel projects and will pick up fired work at a prescheduled time. Parties and workshops will be 90 minutes of hands-on clay lessons and 30 minutes for cake/party (all party materials will be the responsibility of the participant booking the event).
Parties and private workshops are available at both Art Center West and the Art Center at East Roswell Park.
Ages: 8+
Fees: $25/participant

TREE CLIMBING PARTY
Treetops offer an awesome experience as you ascend into the canopy.  You will be guided by professionally trained instructors as Tree for All offers an adventure you won’t soon forget.  No experience is necessary.  Professional climbing equipment provided.  
Parties and private workshops are available at Art Center West (1355 Woodstock Rd, 30075)

CERAMICS FOR YOUNG ADULTS

The session includes instruction based on the experience levels of the class and the individual. The focus will combine wheel and hand-building instruction as well as high temperature glaze and surface while working with ambitious artists of a similar age.

SURVEY OF CLAY
In this all-levels class, students will explore form and surface in a demonstration-based atmosphere while learning basic to intermediate skills using clay as a medium. The potters’ wheel will be introduced
with lessons on wedging, centering, and throwing basic forms such as mugs and bowls.  Students will also expand their survey of the medium by forming works in clay using hand-building techniques.

WHEEL 102: CREATIVE FORM AND SURFACE

Vessel makers with prior experience will explore a variety of advanced throwing and handbuilding techniques to create larger and/or more complex forms.  Participants will also investigate a range of surface treatments to invent lively solutions for their pottery surfaces. No matter their skill level, the class will continue to refine technical skills while exploring personal ideas, thinking innovatively, and receiving helpful advice and constructive criticism.

FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE
Working from images and memory, this course will introduce the tools and techniques used to sculpt the human and animal forms in clay with personal symbolism, intuition and creativity as major goals. Some experience with clay or sculpting is desirable, but participants of all levels will hone skills through drawing exercises, modeling in clay, and creative surface design.

OUTDOOR CLAY FORMS
This hand-building course will focus on both technical and aesthetic issues when creating large forms for outdoor spaces.  A wide variety of forms ranging from garden furniture to mosaics and sculpture to vessels will be the focal point for instruction.  A blanket of building and surface techniques will be covered, but the focus for both forming and finishing will depend heavily on the interest of the class as well as the individual.  Clay and glaze materials at both high and low-fire temperatures will be covered.

SODA AESTHETICS
This firing course is for intermediate to advanced students who wish to explore the potential of soda firing. Demonstrations will guide participants week to week and while they are encouraged to experiment with a variety of materials in the soda kiln to enhance their personal vision in clay. High and low-fire possibilities will be explored. Both handbuilders and wheel-throwers are encouraged to participate.

This program allows intermediate and advanced students time in the studio to complete desired projects outside the structure of a formal class and to continue to grow by applying knowledge gained through prior coursework.
